July 6th, 2012 - Use Tropical Plants

It doesn't matter where you live you can have your own tropical paradise.

If you have an area in your garden during the heat of the summer time that is so intensely shade and you can't even get impatiens to grow, tropical plants are perfect - they love deep shady areas.

Especially varieties like the Kimberly Fern. Most of us know this plant because you can buy it at the big box stores for five bucks for a three gallon plant. But why just use it in containers? Plant it as an annual in the garden - and you plant five of them as a grouping and you have intense look and impact. Why? Because not only do we have the color green - which is a color remember - but we also have the beautiful soft texture.

The key thing is mix it with other foliage plants that have lots of color to the foliage. For example the Limelight Dracena - Craigeye Dracena - can come in dark green or you can get it in the Limelight version. Intense shade it loves and it just glows in the dark.

And don't forget the Stingray Alocasia. This is related to the Elephant Ear. It's very tropical so it is not winter hardy in most zones, but what is great about it is that it looks just like a Stingray.

Don't forget about tall plants. A Bottle Palm which fills in the big void and at the end of Summertime you can bring it in as a house plant. That's it.

Use tropical plants in deep shady areas.
